How Is The Hospitality Industry Addressing Addiction Challenges?

January 17, 2025

The hospitality industry’s commitment to addressing addiction challenges is a significant and impactful endeavor, demonstrated by substantial events like Shatterproof’s eighth annual Hospitality Heroes Reception. Scheduled during the Americas Lodging Investment Summit (ALIS) in Los Angeles from January 28 to 30, this event aims to highlight important issues related to addiction. Shatterproof, a nonprofit organization, has been tirelessly working to overhaul the healthcare system to better tackle addiction and ensure that people receive quality treatment based on scientific evidence. This year’s reception, set for January 29, will honor Amanda Hite, President and CEO of STR, and acknowledge hospitality companies that champion Shatterproof’s mission. Such events have raised over $5 million since their inception in 2013, reflecting the industry’s ongoing support and dedication to this cause.

Industry Commitment and Collaborative Efforts

One of the key highlights of the upcoming summit is a panel discussion on addiction, featuring prominent individuals like Amanda Hite, Shatterproof’s CEO Gary Mendell, and top executives from major hotel chains such as Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Hyatt Hotels Corp., and IHG Hotels & Resorts. This panel underscores the industry’s shared commitment to tackling addiction-related challenges. Additionally, the partnership between Shatterproof and Northstar Travel Group is noteworthy, aiming to widen addiction education and resources within the hospitality sector. Northstar plans to use its large network to raise awareness and provide support, particularly focusing on fentanyl risks and alcohol use disorder.

Despite challenges like the recent wildfires in Los Angeles County, the BHN Group has confirmed that its ALIS Hotel Week events will proceed as scheduled. This determination highlights the industry’s resilience and commitment to addressing critical issues. The hospitality sector’s unified efforts in combating addiction are evident through initiatives that stress education, awareness, and accessible treatment. These collective actions demonstrate a strong dedication to enhancing public health and supporting those in the workforce affected by substance use disorders.
